Protector of the IDC goes into retirement
Bishop Dr Gebhard Fürst, the Protector of the IDC, officially retired on Monday, 4 December 2023. Pope Francis has accepted his resignation on the grounds of age.
Last Saturday, the Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart bid farewell to his diocese in a packed church service and a dignified celebration. On the previous Thursday, Vice President Erik Thouet and the small team from the IDC office, Secretary Brigitte Vogt and Managing Director Jörg Stein, had the opportunity to present Bishop Gebhard with a special gift. Vice President Gilbert de Lima had a scarf designed by the Adavasi, the original inhabitants of India. Bishop Gebhard was visibly moved by this exclusive gift.
The IDC is deeply indebted to Bishop Gebhard. In his 23 years as bishop, he has not only repeatedly promoted and strengthened the diaconate in his diocese, but also the International Diaconate Centre. He was present at numerous IDC events around the world and was always happy to make time for the board.
