The Pro Diakonia in the German-Speaking Area Project* Initiated
The IDC Board met in Johannesburg between February 25th and March 1st. Our host deacon, Greg Garnie prepared everything wonderfully and, as a result, all the conference took place in a good atmosphere. The main topic on the agenda was the discussion and preparation of the Pro Diakonia worldwide project which will be preceded by a similarly named project in the German speaking area.

Velehrad 2013
Participants from more than 30 countries
The IDC has chosen Velehrad, the famous place of pilgrimage, on purpose. It is closely linked with the tradition of the two Apostles of the Slavs, Sts. Cyril and Methodius. In the year of our conference, one commemorated the fact that 1150 years before, the Patrons of Europe had set out on the mission to the Slavs. The abbey itself was founded by the Cistercians in the 13th century. The place offered a magnificent backstage as well as a programmatic orientation for the conference.

Pro Diakonia
The Pro Diakonia Project is devoted to strengthening the permanent diaconate and its independence within the relationship existing between the ranks of the hierarchy, for otherwise the permanent diaconate would not be sustainable.
The project started in the year 2001 in the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Now it will be continued at the scale of the whole German-speaking area. In collaboration with the IDC, a researcher from the St. Georgen Graduate School of Philosophy and Theology will carry out the project for the next four years.
